In the edition nr13 06/2017, the Europes nr1 magazine "MOTORRAD"  has finally addressed the subject of the motorcycle  tyre age more extensively. Thus, two sets of Michelin Power 2CT DOT 2515 were tested, one of which was stored in a cool and dry place, the second in a direct sun in a greenhouse to make it even faster.

Conclusion: "If the storage conditions are favorable, the tires are durable for many years, but they are often much faster in use. Only in the extreme test in the rain did the performance decrease slightly. "

Tire Age vs. Safety: Inspect Tires, Not Just Dates

The tyre age / DOT has always been a hotly debated topic, where there is no definite recommendation for all motorcyclists. Obviously every buyer wants a current m/c tyre, since the motorcycle tyres are produced around the world, it can take several months until they arrive into the sale in Europe at all.

Also legally the decision about the age of a tyre DOT has been clarified.
"A factory new tyre is also considered as a new, until 5 years after its production"


We don`t realy agree with that.
Ther must be a difference between the different types of tyres, like touring or slick tyres enduro, scooter ...

Our recommendation is: ... the tyre with a DOT up to 3 years after manufacture may be considered as new.
We label tyres in our shop if they are older, and sell them with discount.
Slick tyres are labeld when older then 2 years.

But we have the problem that when we order tyres from the facory, we also don't receive any information about the DOT of the tyres, and there is no possibility to clear this in advance.

If you are not happy with the tyre you have received, there is no problem we take them back.

So please dear bikers, we are willing shipping allways the newest tyre, but please just take in account ... we ares selling rubber and not yogurt ;))

How old can motorcycle tyres be and still be safe ?

  • In use, the tyres are aging more quickly.
  • Discoloration and smal cracks are a good sign, to think about a change.
  • About the tread depth, there are still no identic regulation in the EU 1,0 - 1,6 depending on the country.
  • And consider, then less pattern you have, the tyre don't heat up so quick.
  • It is an ilusion, to think when you tyre looks like a slick, you can use it like one.


So   ... let's get ready to rubberrrrr !!!!!!
