CONTI ROADATTACK 2 IN "C" FOR BMW >>

The ContiRoadAttack 2 from Europe's leading tyre manufacturer Continental is a new development for sports bikes and sports touring bikes. Continental's development engineers in Korbach in the German federal state of Hesse have adapted the tyre tread and compound to accommodate the latest findings in tyre technology, which means that this tyre achieves more grip on wet roads and more on dry asphalt than its popular predecessor. Handling and mileage performance has also been increased.

These results were achieved through a range of design measures in tyre development. Continental Traction Skin Technology, for example, uses a special coating in the tyre mould to prevent the release agents required when 'baking' the tyre in the mould from remaining on the tyre afterwards. The running-in time needed for the tyre is therefore safe and extremely short. This makes the new ContiRoadAttack 2 the first tyre to offer complete riding safety as soon as it is fitted.

The new tyre offers a further safety benefit on sports bikes and sports touring bikes, thanks to its 'Continuous Compound Technology' - the combination of a soft compound on the sidewall with harder rubber across the middle of the tread increases safety during cornering, without having to sacrifice high mileage performance. The use of 'Black Chili Compound' containing silica and carbon black, as used in the racing world, means faster heat build-up, something that is important for grip, especially on wet roads. The tyre structure was also redesigned to achieve greater riding dynamics and grip. This involved marrying the steel belt casing with the special tyre contour to further enhance safe handling and precise steering response.

The new ContiRoadAttack 2 will be available from the tyre trade at the start of the 2010 season. Continental will be producing the tyre in six sizes for the front axle and seven for the rear. Approvals have already been obtained for over 250 bikes (from manufacturers including BMW, Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha).

With the new ContiRaceAttack Custom, Continental presents a wide high-performance tyre for custom bikes. The new tyre, in 240mm form, not only excels with its attractive design, its modern zero-degree belt and a sporting rubber CCT compound – Continuous Compound Technology – but is also the lightest of its size and one of the first wide rear tyre for motorcycles to have a speed index of over 270kph.

The motorcycle division at Continental broadens its range with a very special tyre for very special motorcycles. The attractive high-performance wide tyre in the size 240/40 ZR 18 is specially developed for the world-wide growing segment of custom specials.  Cruisers, choppers, muscle bikes, streetfighters or stretched sports bikes – anyone modifying a bike going for a proper wide-tyre look will find the perfect presentation with the Conti Custom but can also rely on a convincing performance in all situations.

The new ContiRaceAttack Slick represents the next stage for Continental Motorcycle Tyres in building up its racing tyre program. The Slick tyres developed for ambitious amateurs but also for professionals complete the successful, sporty ContiRaceAttack family of tyres. The new profile-less sports tyre is manufactured in many different compound versions including the currently unique size with a 60 cross-section for the rear wheel.

The new ContiRaceAttack Slick comes with the same features as the ContiRaceAttack Comp. which has established itself on the market for some time now and is internationally successful. It was particularly developed for the Supersport and Stocksport classes and offers the high performance features which also distinguish the profiled variants: A zero-degree-steel band at the front and rear, black-chili rubber compound and “Continuous Compound” technology. One very new feature is the special rear wheel contour with the 60 cross-section which, above all, ensures enormous grip and even better thrust forward thanks to the increased contact area. The front wheel variants, compared with the competition model, have received a new contour. Furthermore a lot of weight has been lost on the front wheel in order to further optimize handling and feedback.

Motorcycle Tires Under Extreme Load: A Look at the Physics of Grip

This text dives into the extreme stresses placed on motorcycle tires at high speeds, highlighting the impressive performance of these seemingly simple components.

Forces at Play:

  • < 200 HP: The engine's immense power needs to be transferred to the road through the tire, posing a huge challenge for grip.
  • < 270 km/h (168 mph): At this speed, the tire rotates 1.5 times per second and travels 4.5 km (2.8 miles) further than the front tire due to "spin" caused by slippage.
  • Torque: The engine's gearing amplifies torque at the rear wheel, resulting in strong pulling force.
  • 1450 Newtons: This immense force pushes the motorcycle and rider through the wind, with the tire providing the frictional force necessary for forward movement.
  • 150 kg (330 lbs) Wheel Load: The motorcycle's weight rests on the tire, further increasing friction and wear.
  • 4.5% Slip: At high speeds, some slippage is unavoidable, leading to heat generation and wear.
  • 100 Degrees Celsius Rubber Temperature: Frictional heat can significantly raise the rubber temperature, affecting its properties and grip.
  • 270 Newtons Centrifugal Force: The centrifugal force on each individual belt thread within the tire is enormous and can lead to structural damage.
