Can I fit lower speed rated motorcycle tires?

Motorcycle tyres withe the M&S mark can be used with a lower speedindex then in your vehicle handbook.

For example when you want to mount on a BMW R 1250 GS offroad tyres.

You can get specific ‘winter motorcycle tires’. These are better known as M+S rated tires. M+S stands for Mud and Snow and tyres that are M&S rated usually have a snowflake symbol on the tyre wall or they will clearly mention M+S. In countries where winter tyres are a legal requirement, motorcycles are required to have them fitted.

In the most EU countries the Speedlimit with M&S Wintertires is Q = 160 km/h

8.66 million motorcycle tires / scooter tires were sold in the tire replacement market across Europe in 2023.
This corresponds to a decrease of 11.2% compared to the previous year.

In the last quarter it fell again significantly with 24.4%, after 20.2 in Q3 - 9.6 Q2 and 2.4 Q1

Mitas continues its drive to be the brand of choice for ultimate endurance enthusiasts, this time with the launch of its newest tire line, the ENDURO TRAIL-RALLY. This next generation tire line is the result of years of development and off-road testing by rally racers and is made to tackle tough terrain and any weather.

The ENDURO TRAIL-RALLY range comes in one rear tire and three different front tire options designed to give bikes greater stability, handling and puncture-proof resistance, even at high speeds. Riders can count on long-lasting durability even when put to the test of extreme endurance competitions.

Gustavo Pinto Teixeira, Vice President of Two Wheels and Specialty Tires at Yokohama TWS, remarks: “With this new line, Mitas now offers a complete tire range for rally riders. We took feedback from Dakar Rally racers to build a strong range of rally competition tires. We can’t wait to see how they perform in the 2024 Dakar Rally, the grand debut for the new Mitas ENDURO TRAIL-RALLY tires.”

In MOTORRAD (issue 07/2023), sport and sport-touring motorbike tyres were tested on the KTM 390 DUKE in the dimensions 110/70 R17 and 150/60 R17.

Three manufacturers received the test rating "very good" BRIDGESTONE S22, METZELER M9 RR, MICHELIN ROAD 6

One manufacturer received a "good" DUNLOP GPR 300

Two have to be content with a "satisfactory".  CONTINENTAL CONTIMOTION CHENG SHIN CST CM-615 CM-616

How MOTORRAD tests

A quick tyre test on a country road? Not conceivable! Such tests are only seriously feasible on specially designed test tracks of the tyre industry. In this case, we were able to use the premises of the Japanese manufacturer Bridgestone in Nettuno (near Rome). For the asphalt test, we used the 2.2 km long "Carrera track" with many bends, for the wet test we used the permanently watered, 1.6 km long handling track. These criteria are the focus of the MOTORRAD evaluation:

  • Manoeuvrability ...is the steering force to bring the bike into a leaning position and keep it in line in alternating curves.
  • Limit behaviour* ... stands for the controllability of the tyre at the limit. Tests on wet and dry roads.
  • Steering precision* ... in passages of varying speed with complicated curve radii. Provides information on whether the motorbike follows the desired course, which is determined by the steering forces, or whether significant line corrections are required.
  • Cornering stability ...tests rocking in (alternating) curves and on bumps. Tested in different modes and when accelerating at an angle.
  • Straight-line stability ... is tested at high speed. Does the motorbike remain stable on course, or does oscillation interfere with the ride?
  • Acceleration grip* ...refers to lateral control and power transmission in fast corners (wet/dry).
  • Suspension* ... is the lateral control at maximum lean angle (wet/dry). A tightrope walk that is only possible on a closed track.
  • Set-up torque ... refers to the motorbike's set-up when braking in a leaned position. This reaction must be compensated for with a counterforce (pushing) at the inner end of the handlebars.
  • Filling pressures**: Road / wet (v/h): 2.0/2.2 bar.

*Sections marked with an asterisk are transferable to motorbikes that have a similar geometry to the KTM 390 Duke. **Indicated is the price range for a set of tyres (front/rear) in the tested version in common tyre online shops, as of 1 March 2023.

BRIDGESTONE S22 - "Conclusion: The Bridgestone S 22 is a sports tyre that shines in this test above all with its excellent everyday qualities. Perfect handling is joined by 1a rain qualities with the best braking values in the test."

METZELER M9 RR - Verdict: "Sportiness in sun and rain - the Metzeler is a recommendation for cornering junkies, whatever the weather. For a sports tyre, a very unusual and, in this test, very impressive combination."

MICHELIN ROAD 6 - Verdict: "The bottom line is that the Michelin offers a very balanced package for everyday riding. Beginners who ride their 125 or 48 hp bike year-round will quickly come to appreciate the Road 6's good-natured characteristics."

DUNLOP GPR 300 - Conclusion: "With the Dunlop, an entry-level bike like the 390 KTM in this test clearly gains in sportiness. Even in the rain, the GPR-300 delivers enough grip to push around corners with decent confidence."

CONTINENTAL CONTIMOTION - Conclusion: "In good weather, the ContiMotion is really fun on country roads, even if they are small and winding, and leaves a good impression. In the rain, its restrained grip quickly makes it lack confidence."

CHENG SHIN CST CM-615 CM-616 - "Conclusion: Fair-weather riders on 125s won't feel any shortcomings, but in the rain you quickly reach the CST's limit. On bikes in the 48 hp class, however, the tyre is not a recommendation on dry or wet asphalt."

The entire tyre test can be reordered as a print edition or PDF here.

Also in the next issue there will be a test and technical analysis tyre wear. Which factors are decisive for outstanding mileage?

How to change & balance your own motorcycle tyres

Some videos they explain you how to change your motrcycle tyres.

In the edition nr13 06/2017, the Europes nr1 magazine "MOTORRAD"  has finally addressed the subject of the motorcycle  tyre age more extensively. Thus, two sets of Michelin Power 2CT DOT 2515 were tested, one of which was stored in a cool and dry place, the second in a direct sun in a greenhouse to make it even faster.

DOT Nummber - "Department of Transportation"  tyre age code

Conclusion: "If the storage conditions are favorable, the tires are durable for many years, but they are often much faster in use. Only in the extreme test in the rain did the performance decrease slightly. "

The very fast-growing Indian company Apollo Tires, which belongs to VREDESTEIN, is showing its first radial motorcycle tire "Alpha-H1" at the EICMA 2018 and would like to reach the European market, but not the Apollo brand.

Alberto Viganò General Manager of the Apollo Tires two-wheel tire division:

"Only recently Apolo tires in the motorcycle tire segment is active, they will set up a development center in the Netherlands and then test the new developments in Italy at Vredestein."

The H1 is already being assembled in India in tire sizes 110/70 R17 and 150/60 R17 on the KTM 125, 390 Duke and BMW 310.

The two additions will add a new dimension to CST’s enduro and motorcross collections, further expanding their product portfolio of world-class tyres.

CM-723/CM-724 are specifically suited to the discipline of enduro racing and are FIM approved. The CM-723, for the front of the bike, has small, irregular and polygonal tread blocks to increase traction, whilst the larger CM-724 has a tread pattern that helps disperse mud and lower rolling resistance. Shoulder knobs are a key feature of both tyres, offering more grip and stability to the bike whilst cornering.

Pit bikes or pocket bikes are mini motorcycles that fathers use to introduce their young children to the world of motorcycling. There are various organizers of these small racing series where the little ones can compete against each other and get their first taste of racing. Even the ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club) organizes a Pocket Bike Cup, which has been held for the 22nd time in 2017.

These 4-horsepower bikes are miniature versions of large racing motorcycles and currently run on PMT standard tires. Only tires from PMT are permitted. No other tires from other manufacturers or sizes may be used.

  • Front wheel: Junior 90/65 R 6.5
  • Rear wheel: Junior 90/65 R 6.5

In addition to the fun that everyone is supposed to have, it's also about hundredths of a second, so the motorcycles are eagerly tinkered with.

Other tire manufacturers also offer suitable tires for these small bikes. There are different motorcycle tires for every application, such as slicks, motocross, street, etc.

The Sportsman from Schwalbe is the first sport touring scooter tire with dual-compound. It makes the sporty all-rounder durable with excellent cornering grip- contradictory properties that are not achieved with only one compound at this high level.

Schwalbe designed the Sportsman in the size 3.50-10 for classic scooters - some for Lambretta and Vespa - as they are popular, especially in England. But the all-round tire is of course for all scooters of this size.

Motorcycle Tires Under Extreme Load: A Look at the Physics of Grip

This text dives into the extreme stresses placed on motorcycle tires at high speeds, highlighting the impressive performance of these seemingly simple components.

Forces at Play:

  • < 200 HP: The engine's immense power needs to be transferred to the road through the tire, posing a huge challenge for grip.
  • < 270 km/h (168 mph): At this speed, the tire rotates 1.5 times per second and travels 4.5 km (2.8 miles) further than the front tire due to "spin" caused by slippage.
  • Torque: The engine's gearing amplifies torque at the rear wheel, resulting in strong pulling force.
  • 1450 Newtons: This immense force pushes the motorcycle and rider through the wind, with the tire providing the frictional force necessary for forward movement.
  • 150 kg (330 lbs) Wheel Load: The motorcycle's weight rests on the tire, further increasing friction and wear.
  • 4.5% Slip: At high speeds, some slippage is unavoidable, leading to heat generation and wear.
  • 100 Degrees Celsius Rubber Temperature: Frictional heat can significantly raise the rubber temperature, affecting its properties and grip.
  • 270 Newtons Centrifugal Force: The centrifugal force on each individual belt thread within the tire is enormous and can lead to structural damage.
