When it comes to testing tyres, the motorcycle industry has for a long time recognised that Motorrad Magazine are the leaders in their field.

Their expert independent test riders score all tyres in a number of areas, covering performance in both wet and dry conditions. Recently it was the turn of classic tyres to come under scrutiny, and we’re pleased to report that Continental were the runaway winners of the test with the ContiRoadAttack 2 CR and ContiClassicAttack radials – a remarkable 20 points ahead of their nearest rivals!

Touratech is currently showing a weight-optimized conversion of a BMW 1200 GS Rambler for off-road use. In addition to reducing the weight, the fork was also replaced and one from the BMW F800 GS Adventure was installed with a 2.15 x 21 inch spoke rim. This provides much more guidance in curves than the standard front wheel, which collapses more quickly on loose surfaces.

On the road, the driver doesn't want a smaller diameter for handling purposes.

Finding the right compromise is the big challenge for manufacturers, almost all of whom offer a travel enduro, but with different concepts.

The 2017 Honda Africa Twin is equipped with a 21" front wheel.
Ducati Multistrada 1200 Enduro has 19" like the Multistrada 950
Ducati Multistrada 1200, however, only 17"
Suzuki V-Strom 650 19"
KTM 1190 Adventure 19"
BMW 1200 GS are also all on 19".

The wish would be like some supermotos with two sets of rims, one for on-road and one for off-road.
So far, the best compromise for heavy enduro tourers seems to be the 19" tires on spoke rims.

Pit bikes or pocket bikes are mini motorcycles that fathers use to introduce their young children to the world of motorcycling. There are various organizers of these small racing series where the little ones can compete against each other and get their first taste of racing. Even the ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club) organizes a Pocket Bike Cup, which has been held for the 22nd time in 2017.

These 4-horsepower bikes are miniature versions of large racing motorcycles and currently run on PMT standard tires. Only tires from PMT are permitted. No other tires from other manufacturers or sizes may be used.

  • Front wheel: Junior 90/65 R 6.5
  • Rear wheel: Junior 90/65 R 6.5

In addition to the fun that everyone is supposed to have, it's also about hundredths of a second, so the motorcycles are eagerly tinkered with.

Other tire manufacturers also offer suitable tires for these small bikes. There are different motorcycle tires for every application, such as slicks, motocross, street, etc.

MICHELIN is taking part in the 2011 Dakar Rally (Moto class event) - alongside its official partners KTM, BMW, Aprilia and Yamaha - with the MICHELIN Desert Race tires developed specifically for the new 450cc bikes.

The MICHELIN Desert Race tire delivers improved handling and grip as well as superior lateral stability and outstanding longevity.

The new tire is the result of Michelin’s 30 years of experience in cross-country rallying. Developed by engineers at the MICHELIN Technology Center in Clermont-Ferrand, the MICHELIN Desert Race has been adapted for the new 450cc prototype factory bikes.

The 450cc bikes developed by manufacturers make different demands on tires than the 690cc bikes of the past,” explains Christophe Chatras, head of off-road motorcycle racing.

“The new machines are lighter, their weight is apportioned differently and the engine power is more effectively managed and transferred to the ground. In fact, the 450cc factory bikes deliver very high performance and thus make considerable demands on tires. The new MICHELIN Desert Race was developed for use with these new-generation motorcycles. It’s a versatile product that is suitable for the Dakar Rally’s different kinds of terrain, such as rocky trails and sand. Since last summer, the new MICHELIN Desert Race has undergone some 3,000 kilometers of tests in race conditions, including a number of stages of the Shamrock Rally. The results speak for themselves.”

ContiTour is the brand new tyre for riders of big custom bikes, cruisers and choppers. Again, the tread pattern offers efficient drainage properties for excellent grip on wet roads.

On the rear tyre, a central band with no tread boosts mileage returns and limits tread movement for increased stability under acceleration.

A brand new compound formula has been designed and tested by our experienced team to deliver excellent mileage and consistent performance throughout the life of the tyre.

The ContiLegend white-wall tyre is based on our popular Milestone, which will already be familiar to many custom and cruiser riders. The vintage tread pattern and whitewall design hide some of the very latest tyre technologies.

An improved version of MileagePlus delivers more miles and increased consistency throughout the life of the tyre, whereas the multi-groove tread pattern has been optimised to deliver excellent water drainage properties for improved performance in wet conditions.

A specially engineered carcass delivers supreme comfort and superb handling even on the heaviest of machines.

DIABLO ROSSO™ SCOOTER, on the other hand, is inspired by the DIABLO™ family DNA, specifically the DIABLO ROSSO™ line which represents the Pirelli supersport tyre range. This tyre also takes its tread pattern from another pillar in the Pirelli range, the DIABLO ROSSO™ III which made its début this year, immediately gaining popularity among bikers all over the world.

Just as DIABLO ROSSO™ III redefined the concept of sport riding in the motorcycle world, taking it to a new level, DIABLO ROSSO™ SCOOTER represents the new frontier for high performance scooters thanks to grip, unprecedented handling and consistent performance, characteristics to make the daily ride more pleasant and satisfying, regardless of the environment.

Pirelli is pleased to present the new 2017 Scooter Range which from January, will introduce two new products onto the market, ANGEL™ SCOOTER and DIABLO ROSSO™ SCOOTER. These will be available with a complete range of sizes, and will progressively replace and expand the current DIABLO™ SCOOTER model during the course of next year.

ANGEL™ SCOOTER and DIABLO ROSSO™ SCOOTER represent the direct movement of two historic Pirelli tyre families into the world of scooters. ANGEL™ and DIABLO™ families, from which they maintain the typical characteristics and distinctive traits, for users with varying needs and on different types of scooters.
